Taste
“Taste” is a very bold, pivotal song on this album that’s taking a shot at her ex’s new girlfriend. It was made very iconic by the music video with Jenna Ortega and is still one of the most talked about and played songs on the album.
Please Please Please
“Please Please Please” is a very playful song that encompasses her relationship status which is confirmed by the music video featuring her boyfriend at the time. This song is very repetitive in the chorus but elsewhere in the song it’s not where she’s telling more of a story in the verses.
Good Graces
In “Good Graces” she’s explaining that she’ll be loyal to a relationship if her partner is. It contains very repetitive backing track and vocals, but the other lyrics of the song are not similar. The song is very upbeat and lively.
Sharpest Tool
In chorus last word of one sentence is the first of the next
Something really interesting about “Sharpest Tool” is that in the chorus the last word of one sentence is the first word of the next. For example she says, “Guess I’ll waste another year I’m wondering if/If that was casual then I’m an idiot.” Additionally the song starts slower and then speeds up in the chorus and beyond.
Coincidence
“Coincidence” heavily relies on the background music and vocals especially with the “La la, la la la” after the chorus. It gives the impression that it was sang live with the band influencing how the music sounds.
Bed Chem
The vocals in “Bed Chem” are sang in a very light tone where many different parts of the song are layered on top of each other. This song exhibits her vocal range especially in the chorus where her voice reaches very high notes and then moves back down the scale in the verses.
Espresso
“Espresso” was the first single off of the album “Short n Sweet” and it immediately became a hit. It came out almost six months before the rest of the album and just in time for it to become the song of the summer. It’s upbeat and lighthearted and was a perfect song for the time of year when it came out. It’s repetitive with the chorus and the line “That’s that me espresso.” In this song Sabrina comes off as playful and this song is one of— if not the most— iconic song on this album.
Dumb & Poetic
“Dumb & Poetic” is a more melancholy song that shows off Sabrina’s vocal range. There is almost no repetition in this song apart from the lines “Just cause you act like one/Doesn’t make you a man”, “Just cause you talk like one/Doesn’t make you a man”, and “Just cause you leave like one/Doesn’t make you a man.” This song shows how a man thinks that he’s better than her just because he’s a man and she’s fallen into the trap that he’s set for her by being “Dumb & Poetic”.
Slim Pickins
“Slim Pickins” is the most country song on the album and is different from all the other songs. She uses the guitar in a way— and she sings in a certain way— that sounds a little different than the rest of her songs and gives it the tone of being country. Sabrina uses this song to express her opinions on a person and then she defends her words. This is specifically shown in the lyrics, “Guess I’ll end this life alone/I am not dramatic, these are just the thoughts that pass right through me.” In this song, Sabrina is presenting herself in a more playful way with a hidden undertone of sadness. She’s saying that she has to be satisfied with who she is dating because there’s no one better.
Juno
“Juno” is a very iconic song on the album, especially after the influence of this part of the Short n’ Sweet tour. This song has become a fan favorite with both the juno arrests and poses giving it this hold on the audience.
Lie to Girls
“Lie To Girls” is a slower song that changes drastically in rhythm in the verses. It starts off with the slower “Don’t swear on your mom/That it’s the first drink that you’ve had in like a month” and then in the second verse moves to being faster with “All of your best excuses/No, they don’t stand a chance”. Even though these verses are so different they both go back to the same slower chorus. The song is pretty repetitive which might be a way of Sabrina convincing herself that it’s his fault and that it would happen to any other girl.
Don't Smile
“Don’t Smile” is repetitive and layered beneath the music instead of over it. This gives it the impression of being whispered and is overpowered by the music. This is a slower song that leaves a lasting impression on a listener.
